DIY Bride – Avoiding Pitfalls

Howdy LoveBirds! If you have been following along this week; you will have noticed that I opened up the discussion of being a ‘DIY Bride’ in my last post.  I didn’t truly feel that I could even begin to scratch the surface necessary to cover DIY Bride’s in one post, so I decided to turn it into this week’s series.

I wanted to discuss the pitfalls of being a DIY Bride and ways for you to avoid them. So let’s get right to it!

1) Plan and Prepare!

As with the rest of your wedding, plan and prepare all of your DIY projects. Round up print outs of projects, create shopping lists of what you’ll need for each project, insert them into your wedding binder (if you have one) and schedule a block of time for you to complete each project.

2) Minimize Your Spending

And not just your dollars! In my last post I raved about DIY manicures because I was able to save money and schedule the time to do them when most nail salons would be closed. DIY projects can be a double edged sword on spending and time management. To maximize your DIY Bride projects, MINIMIZE! You can minimize your spending by looking for sales, utilizing coupons, or even getting mileage out of left over stock from old projects. Minimize your time as well (see step one), I was once told that when you calendar something you should ‘make it sacred’ and do not put it aside, focus your attention to it once it’s time. I loved that tip! Don’t blow off the block of time you have scheduled for your projects, especially when your wedding is looming and you have other projects still scheduled to be completed.

3) Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help

So you scheduled your time, you started your project, and now it is taking wayyyy longer than you hoped or even expected it too, bummer! Reach out to one of the members of your bridal party and ask them to step in, on the same token, don’t be a Bridezilla stomping around and demanding of her bridal party while feigning illness on the couch (anyone else remember that episode of Bridezilla? apalling!)

As far as help goes, also have a plan in place for set up on the day of your wedding, if you are using a Wedding Planner (yes DIY Bride’s also use wedding planners) this should  be part of your package; if you are not using a wedding planner ask if your venue provides a Day-0f-Coordinator (some venues include this at no extra charge), you can also ask another wedding go-er, maybe a friendly neighbor or aunt; with less responsibility if they wouldn’t mind helping you out.

4) Know Your Own Limitations

Some projects can become all consuming even if you have planned and prepped. Sometimes even the craftiest of us can get in over our heads. If you are overwhelmed and asking yourself how on earth you got into this mess and what possessed you to think you could put together 100 mason jar centerpieces, menus, favors, candy bar, table numbers, escort cards and welcome bags, you may need to rethink. Is there something you can cut back on? Is there a faster alternative to what you had planned with the crafts already on hand?

5) Pinterest Can Be Your Friend

I sort of unassumingly bashed Pinterest in my last post. Sorry Pinterest! It’s all love! Pinterest can be a great source of inspiration as well as education from endless resources. There are countless articles on wedding favors and wedding planning tips for DIY Bride’s. Again, print out what you need and see step 1)

6) You Don’t Have to DIY Everything

This also ties in with 4)  I went to the wedding of a friend of mine a couple of years back. He called me up as a sort of an impromptu ‘Save The Date’, within the conversation he also proudly proclaimed that his Bride-To-Be would be making their cake. I thought they had both lost their marbles, but I just kindly said ‘Oh Wow, that’ll be great’ or something generic along those lines. Boy oh Boy did I eat my humble pie on that one! The cake she baked turned out amazing and she had planed for it to be delivered to their venue on the day of. I also had to remind myself that she was a chef by trade, so baking her own wedding cake came naturally to her. If you’re not much of a baker, your own wedding might not be the place to start. There is nothing wrong with hiring a baker or a florist and filling in the rest of your day with your own DIY projects.

Have you ever had a DIY project gone awry? Sound off in the comments!

DIY Bride

I have recently become a huge fan of at home manicures, or DIY (do it yourself) manicures. For a few reasons actually. One, of course is a tight financial budget, two is a tight time budget (I often paint my nails late at night after my daughter is asleep :), and three is particularity. The phrase ‘particularity’ can conjure up a somewhat pompous notion of me, so allow me to be clear. Yes, if I am paying for a service I would hope to get what I expect out of said service, this by no means indicates that I stomp around like a giant brat demanding things or, ever, become rude or abrasive to someone in the service field; my early twenties were spent in retail management so I can understand the pangs of customer service! Enter DIY.

DIY can be great for a multitude of things, DIY Manicures, DIY Home Improvements and DIY Weddings.

So this is generally how it goes down; and ladies I am talking to you! Prince Charming proposes, you are now engaged, Congratulations! You are suddenly inundated with wedding plans: dress options, venue, date, registry’s, the list goes on and on.

Enter Pinterest

We have all been swept away with Pinterest at one point or another, I am guilty of this as well and I am not entirely bashing Pinterest, I think it can be a great source of inspiration. However, I will say this once, so please take note if need be:

If you are not the DIY type, Your wedding is no place to start

Pinterest Fail - DIY Bride

Pinterest Fail

Feel free to quote me on that, write it down if you need too, block and copy it, add it to your inspiration board, whatever you have to do, PLEASE DRILL THAT SENTIMENT INTO YOUR HEAD!! Hey, we all have our limitations, I can’t bake to save my life, pull apart Toll House Cookies, yes, Pinterest recipes, not so much! If you are not a DIY Bride, there is nothing wrong with that.. there’s not  If you ARE a DIY Bride, or you choose to completely ignore the above quote, stick around for my next post on avoiding the pitfalls of associated with being a DIY Bride.

Vera Wang Spring 2016

Howdy Lovebirds! You may have been following (or perhaps lucky enough to have attended) The New York Bridal Market which started last week. One of the vast reasons of my love for the internet is the ability to catch photos, videos and previews, specifically on Instagram , of events to which I am not yet privy too. (that’d be my optimistic side prevailing!)

Vera Wang’s designer bridal gowns are synonymous with brides around the globe, and referenced in nearly any movie, or tv show depicting a wedding. You may have also noticed that #VeraWang was trending over the weekend, and with plenty of reason! Evidently Vera Wang’s Spring 2016 collection is garnering loads of attention, and here is why.

Shocked? So was I!

Let’s Rewind for a moment

From the queen of the ‘princess’ ball gown who gave us looks such as these:

And yes… that would be Chelsea Clinton and Ivanka Trump (respectively) adorned in Vera Wang wedding gowns on their wedding days. I almost wondered for a moment if Vera Wang’s Spring 2016 collection was staring Pnina Tornai’s signature sheer corseted gowns in the face and saying ‘Oh yeahhhhh well Take THAT’! Highly unlikely as it may be, why would Vera Wang go so far left… I asked myself this for quite some time, shock value? Sex appeal? Marketing to a new generation? Who knows. I’m simply settling on the answer ‘because she can’  and so she did!

One of the truly magnificent things about being an artist, whether a writer, a painter, or the designer of high end bridal gowns; is the ability to re-create yourself. The ability to channel your emotions and inspirations into your work and put it out there for all the world to see and share.

So This Is Love Headquarters

So This Is Love Headquarters

Kudos to Vera Wang for taking such a bold step with her Spring 2016 Collection!

I’m just left wondering what the underlay options are…….

Bling It On

Diamonds are a girls best friend’ ‘

April’s birthstone is the White Diamond (I’m lucky enough to be an April baby) and the White Diamond is statistically the most popular engagement ring stone of choice; but for some extra sparkly brides, the bling doesn’t end with their engagement ring but instead extends throughout their entire wedding.

So let’s Bling It On!

In the designer dress department, the *undisputed* queen of bling is  Pnina Tornai, you might recognize her namesake from a little show called “Say Yes To The Dress”. Her gowns are swathed in swarovski crystals which are usually laid upon a sheer corset, most certainly not for the most demure of brides.

A blinged out wedding would not be complete without some centerpiece bling, I am in LOVE with these hanging crystal centerpieces!

Bling is never in short supply if you just have the right inspiration.

Blinged out cake anyone? It’s too pretty too eat!

For me, personally, I am not completely sold on the idea of an ‘all white’ wedding. I love a good pop of color or a nice cohesive color palette. If you are an April bride don’t be afraid to add some color to your bling, or some bling to your color.

While some bling is sure to creep it’s way into your big day, I absolutely love a blinged out frame to hold a cherished picture in.

Are you a bold ‘Bling It On’  type of bride or is ‘Bling Not My Thing’?

Disney Wedding Gowns

Hi Lovebirds! You may have noticed by my last post that I was in dire need of a ‘time out’.

When you live in Florida there is no better way to take a time out than with a weekend trip to Disney (which is only a three hour drive)!! It was a glorious weekend and I even had the pleasure of seeing a bride being whisked away to the Disney Wedding Pavilion in the Grand Floridian; which is where we spent our stay in between visiting the Magic Kingdom.

About a week and a half prior MAC launched a limited edition Cinderella line of products; it is still beyond me how I did NOT know about this line until it sold out 24 hours later, yes, it sold out in 24 hours! Sad face…., and the new Cinderella movie premiered in the box offices over the weekend. In addition to cable running The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, The Princess and The Frog and the original Cinderella, all back to back, phew! That’s a lot of Disney!

With all this Disney inspiration swirling about I thought it would be fun to do a Disney Princess Wedding Gown post. I previously featured the newest edition to the Disney Princess’s on this post but thought it might be fun to revisit some more looks.

I have to be a somewhat predictable and first do a Cinderella Disney Wedding Dress Round Up! How beautiful is the Disney Wedding Gown on the far left by designer Zuhair Murad? Love it!

I love the bride who went viral with her real life adaptation of Princess Ariel on her wedding day. Oh boy if I could pull off that red hair, it’d be perfect for our future beach wedding! hehe

Nothing was more magical than the moment Princess Tiana looked down and realized she was no longer a frog and was wearing the most gorgeous Disney Wedding Gown ever. My new favorite Disney Wedding Gown for sure, sorry Cinderella!

Could you dare to live out your Disney Fairy Tale on your wedding day with a Disney Wedding Gown or other Disney touches?

A Day in The Life of a Blogger

I now interrupt our regularly scheduled classy & elegant wedding blog post to bring you this:

TODAY SUCKED!!!

Well I should re-phrase, because ‘Today is Only What You Make of It’ and blah blah blah….. I should say ‘Today defeated Me’ I fought the good fight at first but I lost the battle and let the defeat wash over me somewhere around 2:30-3:00

I woke up with a headache around 5:30 am, presumably from my habit of clenching my teeth in my sleep when I’m stressed. I could not Excedrin, coffee, banana, voodoo dance, wish it, or will it away; in fact it’s still hanging out with us right now! Hi headache!

What happened over the course of the remainder of the day was a blur of work,  jamming emails in between dicing vegetables, social media thread catch up, phone calls, toddler whining, dinner cooking (did I say that already?), home organization, commuting, vacation planning, zombie mode financing, blogging…. did I remember to kiss sweets when I came home? Are these veggies organic?

It’s 8:00 already?! I have to get tod-let in the bath, which coincidentally is her baby tub stuffed into the kitchen sink because out of the three bathrooms we have in this home none of them seem to have a tub, and it’s insanely expensive to add one – thank you previous owner who ripped out a perfectly useful tub for no good reason! I could have used that! Tod-let freaks because she wants to finish watching her show which I’ve pulled her from and I now have a two year old tod-let tantrumming.in a baby bath.in a kitchen sink – is time for a glass of wine yet?

I am a mother, a fiancee, a daughter, a best friend, a sister, a co-worker, a cousin, a niece, and a god daughter. I am a nine to fiver, a blogger, a dreamer of dreams. Not any one of these singular things define me, yet they all define me. I am no different than you.

If I hear the term “work-life balance” today I may burst a vessel, more like “work life lies!”

Goodbye Tuesday March, 10th, 2015, you win

Spring Wedding Gown Inspiration

“Floral’s? For Spring?…… Ground breaking…..”

That is my absolute best Miranda Priestly impression by way of  “The Devil Wears Prada”, though you have to admit her character did have a point. Floral’s are always prevalent in Spring Fashions every year, every where. That’s not to say that it can’t be switched up, I loved when Dolce & Gabbana used fresh floral’s in their models hair for a runway show.

Have you ever been to a wedding that didn’t have some type of flower(s)? Bouquets, Boutonniere’s, Centerpieces, Aisle Decor and so on and so forth. I thought a nice takeaway for some spring wedding gown inspiration might be pastels; also not entirely ground-breaking, but when is the last time you knew a bride that wore a pastel gown with barely there hues? HA! Precisely my point.

So let’s do a spring wedding gown inspiration ‘round-up‘ of pastels, shall we?

I have had a love affair with this Peach Lazaro gown since I saw a bride purchase it on “Say Yes to The Dress”. The chunky jeweled detail belt is the perfect compliment to this Spring Gown

This mint beauty by designer Karen Caldwell has also made the Spring Inspiration Gown round-up. How beautifully would this gown pop amongst an all white wedding? All eyes would divert directly to the bride.

This wedding gown entitled ‘Dori’ by designer Hayley Paige is to die for! I am trying to convince my bestie to wear this for her upcoming nuptials, as soon as this spring wedding gown hit my radar I text her a picture of it. I have featured Hayley Paige on the blog before and I just love her designs!! I love her ability to take a traditional wedding gown and give it that special bit of flare to take it outside the box.

Evidently Christian Siriano designed a bridal gown back in 2013 and I have been (apparently) living under a rock until now, because I had no clue about it what so ever. I cried when he cried on Project Runway right before they announced him as the winner, I did!!! He is by far my favorite Project Runway alum of all time, it was so amazing to see all of his fruitless efforts pay off in the end, especially now that we have this violet Spring Wedding Gown to gawk at!

This gorgeous subdued Blush gown by Tara Keely has been on watch since Sweets proposed to me. I am DYING to try this on, this is the gown I see myself getting married in for our beach side vows. The lace bodice coupled with the overflowing blush tulle is so romantic, no shoes required, I’ll take it!

So Lovebirds, colored gowns?

“I’d give it a go” or “Never in a million years”?

February’s Wedding Dress Pick – The Final Cut

Did you catch the Oscar’s over the weekend Love Birds? I have to say my absolute favorite gown of the evening was Lupita Nyong’o’s.. how flawless does she look in everything?! I can’t even fathom how long it took to get those pearls on her dress; AH-mazing! I, sadly, lost the battle of TV in our house last night, it was me versus two main contender’s so all of my Oscar’s catch-up was done via Instagram, FaceBook & Yahoo.

This week wraps up our final pick for the month of February, from a designer known for down-to-there low back gown’s, Galia Lahav

The bead work on Lupita’s dress inspired me to choose a gown with just as much attention to detail. From the Galia Lahav ‘Tales of The Jazz Age’ collection, I give you the Katharina, complete with silver glass beads and a back cut so low your mother-in-law is sure to faint! I love the patterning of the bead work on the back of this gown coupled with the sheer train, it really completes that 1920’s jazz age feeling.

This gown would be perfectly completed by an up-do with an oversize flower.

If you really wanted to throw all decadence to the wind, and commit to the jazz age look, you can add a few strands of long, knotted pearl necklaces, you know, just because!

And of course, your look wouldn’t be complete with any shoe other than a T-Strap!!

I’m always a sucker for a T-Strap, it must be from my former life as a tap-dancer!!

I am curious to weigh in on the great debate of wearing a sexy gown for your wedding day, what do you think Love Birds? Yay or Nay?

February’s Wedding Dress Pick – Third Edition

It’s time for this week’s dress pick Love Birds! Truth be told, I wanted to bring this dress pick to you last night but had a massive headache (ugh!) that I could not push through, but I’m back in action now!!

I had this week’s pick cataloged. I’ve seen this dress a few times in passing and knew I was going to feature it ; ) This dress speaks to 1950’s simplistic glamour, but the designer’s name is note worthy as well; this week’s pick comes to you from: House of Mooshki

House of Mooshki touts their line of tea-length gowns as well as bespoke tea-length gowns, all of which are vintage inspired. They even have a non-tea length wedding gown called ‘Jacqueline’, it’s not hard to guess where the inspiration was drawn from for that dress!!

I was originally going to wait for Spring to feature a tea-length wedding dress, heck it’s ‘Spring’ here in South Florida and all the New Englander’s are wishing for Spring, so why not?! I love the feel of this dress, it transports me to an era of Pompadours and Pink Ladies. There is a simplistic no-fuss type of elegance to a tea-length dress that cannot be attained with a full ball gown. My favorite way to complete this look… shoes!! A tea-length dress is one you can most certainly go shoe-crazy with as they won’t be hidden under a full skirt. I also love the idea of pairing a tea-length dress with a bird cage veil. If you’re a DIY bride I’m sure a simplistic bird cage veil would be easy enough to whip up!

Traditionally tea-length dresses are paired with day time affairs, so be sure to keep that in mind if you’re leaning towards this length for your wedding.

Have you tried on a tea-length gown in your search for the perfect dress?
